I am sorry, but I really hope that this is some sort of joke and not you trying to explain facts about the relationship between Thranduil and Legolas; because if it is the latter, here are the reasons why you should stop:
1. Legolas was simply a “messenger from his father, King Thranduil of Mirkwood”, who was sent to report the escape of Gollum. No canon-based sources say anything about Thranduil blaming Legolas for Gollum’s escape.
Oh, news flash! Gollum’s escape was actually planned in the Music of the Ainur, so that *spoiler alert* he could unwittingly destroy the Ring of Power by falling into Mt. Doom with it when Frodo hesitated.
2. “Legolas Greenleaf long under trees,
In joy thou hast lived, beware of the sea…” (The Two Towers)
Yes, you read that right: Legolas has lived in JOY. Not parental abuse. JOY.
3. What part of the books or movies suggest that Thranduil knew about Legolas being among the Nine Walkers before the decision was made by Elrond and Gandalf? For all we know, he only sent his son to Rivendell as a messenger, not a tribute to a hopeless quest. He was not “sacrificing his only child” for his “dickass” and “selfish” reasons!
4. And when did destroying evil become a “selfish” reason?
The point here is: Canon!Thranduil is not a bad father! He doesn’t sacrifice his son and blame them for unforeseen incidents and acts of kindness. This plague of Evil!Thranduil needs to be banished and forgotten, because it is not true and goes against everything Professor Tolkien every wrote about Elves. I will gleefully shatter any illusion about Thranduil being a bad father. Fanfictions or roleplaying can have a little fun and make him conflicted between being a king and being a father, but suggesting that Thranduil blamed Legolas for Gollum’s escape, then sent him to Rivendell as punishment knowing full well that his son would be in a dangerous quest is just too much for me to handle. I usually avoid making these big long rants, but anyone in the fandom with the intention of creating Thranduil into a monster of a father will have to know that I and many other people will defend his integrity with every reason we have.
That is all…
Yes thank you. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS
